Early life and education

Kelly was born in 1980, the first of four children to Jim and Donna Kelly, and grew up in Hood River , Oregon . Both parents were converts to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and their father was for some time a bishop of the Church's local ward. Kelly graduated from Brigham Young University , where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science in 2006 . She later continued her studies at American University in Washington, DC , where she received a Juris Doctor in 2012 . She served on an 18 month mission in Barcelona .

Ordain Women

Members of the Ordain Women Organization attempt to enter the general conference priesthood meeting .

In May 2013, Kelly founded Ordain Women to campaign for the ordination of women to the priesthood of Latter-day Saints of Jesus Christ. Local church leaders asked her to stop this campaign. In response, she and her organization protested in Temple Square during general conference in 2014. After that, she was excommunicated, but she did not attend the Disciplinary Council meeting to discuss her excommunication. Her excommunication took place in June 2014.

In the weeks before and after the excommunication, Kelly urged her followers to remain in church and move "hell" as long as they were physically and mentally able to do so. She tried to reverse her excommunication, first with her stake president and then with the First Presidency . But all denied her request and she remained excommunicated.

Kelly has not been part of any religious organization since then. She was ordained a priestess in 2015 by the Association of Roman Catholic Women Priests , a splinter group outside the Roman Catholic Church .
