Katharina Waldmüller , née Katharina Weidner (born April 7, 1792 in Leopoldstadt , † November 28, 1850 in Vienna ) was an Austrian opera singer ( mezzo-soprano ). For almost 30 years (1817 to 1846) she was engaged at the Kärntnertortheater in Vienna , where she sang the Sesto in Mozart's opera Titus .

Life

Waldmüller was the fifth of eleven children of the tailor Franz Weidner from Weidenau (Vidnava / CZ) and of the housemaid Katharina, nee. Fux from Winn / Bavaria. Her brothers were Carl Weidner (actor), Ferdinand Weidner (sound artist) and Joseph Weidner (portrait painter).

It was also her brother Josef who created her portrait, which is now in the Austrian Belvedere Gallery . In 1814 she married Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller , who is now considered one of the most important Austrian painters of the 19th century. This marriage was very inharmonious and was divorced from bed and table in 1834. In the years up to her time as a court opera singer at the Kärntnertortheater, she had various engagements as a singer, for example in Baden near Vienna , in Brno and Prague . The final resting place of Katharina Waldmüller is the Sankt Marxer Friedhof in Vienna.

Of their four children, their son Ferdinand Weidner (1816–1886) became a painter, pianist and composer and their daughter Katharina Lach (1820–1848) became an opera singer (mezzo-soprano)
