The Cathedral of Our Lady of Perpetual Help ( French : Cathédrale Notre Dame du Perpétuel Secours ) is a Roman Catholic cathedral in the city of Niamey in Niger .

history

The parish was founded on January 6, 1931 by Father François Faroud, a missionary of the Society of Africa Missions . Niamey became the seat of an Apostolic Prefecture on April 28, 1942 . Since May 13, 1948, the parish has been named after Our Lady of Perpetual Help . The Congregation of the Sisters of Notre Dame of Perpetual Aid from Canada founded a mission in Niamey in 1959, where they ran the École Canada and Collège Mariama schools . The Apostolic Prefecture of Niamey was elevated to a bishopric on March 21, 1961, a few months after Niger gained independence from France .

The foundation stone for the new episcopal church of Niamey was laid on July 2, 1964. The consecration of the cathedral took place on May 13 in 1967 by Paul Cardinal Zoungrana , the Archbishop of Ouagadougou . On the occasion of the consecration, the Muslim President Hamani Diori paid tribute to the role of the church in the secular state of Niger, especially in the education system. The Diocese of Niamey was promoted to Archdiocese on June 25, 2007.

Building description and use

The Cathedral of Our Lady of Perpetual Help is in the Zongo district in the Niamey II arrondissement . There is a mission school for boys, founded in 1949, and a mission school for girls, founded in 1950. A statue of the Virgin Mary is the work of the sculptor Issoufou Lankondé .

The parish has around 2,800 Catholics from around 40 countries. Masses are held in Zarma , French and English .
