Belluno Cathedral

The Cathedral of Belluno , also called St. Martin's Cathedral Basilica ( Italian Basilica Cattedrale di S. Martino ), is the most important church in the historic center of the northern Italian city of Belluno . The cathedral of the diocese of Belluno-Feltre, with the title of a minor basilica, is dedicated to Martin von Tours .

history

The current cathedral stands on the site of an early Christian church. There is evidence of a church under the patronage of Martin of Tours for the 6th century. In 1030 a cemetery is documented south of the cathedral. The cathedral was built in the period from 1517 according to plans by the architect Tullio Lombardo in the Renaissance style and was completed in 1624 with the consecration of the main altar. The campanile was not completed until 1747. After the earthquake of 1863, the dome and the chancel had to be partially rebuilt. On June 18, 1980, Pope John Paul II gave the cathedral the title of minor basilica.

architecture

facade

The simple, unfinished facade made of unplastered stone is divided vertically into three parts. In the middle part under the gable a rich baroque portal and two Gothic windows open in the lower and middle part; the upper part ends with a tympanum resting on an entablature supported by pilasters. Saints Gioatà, Lukan and Martin are depicted in its central rose window .

inner space

inner space

The interior of the basilica shows Renaissance lines, with the height of the columns giving the upward lift typical of Gothic churches. The three-aisled church is divided into seven bays. The interior has a length of 68 meters and a width of 27 meters. The choir is framed with a threefold row of choir stalls. The dome over the sanctuary is airy and full of light. Behind the last large arch opens the semicircular apse , the vault of which was painted by Antonio Ermolao Paoletti with a triumphal Assumption of Mary . Among the works of great artists kept in the church, it is worth highlighting two paintings by Gaspare Diziani depicting Saints Francis de Sales , Gaetano da Thiene and Andrea Avellino, and the other, the conversion of Saint Paul . Egidio Dall'Oglios created the image of the Holy Family for the altar in the left aisle. The organ was manufactured by the Mascioni company after 1945.

Bell tower

At the exit of the sacristy is the high baroque bell tower designed by the architect Filippo Juvara , who never came to Belluno. Bishop Gaetano Zuanelli, a friend of Juvara, asked him to do the work. The tower was designed on the basis of the tower of the Turin Cathedral raised by Juvarra . The work began in 1732 and was interrupted in 1735 for economic reasons, but was completed on July 16, 1747. With the angel statue, it reaches a height of 71.98 meters. The angel, which was modeled from wood based on a design by Andrea Brustolon, is clad with copper and is 4.63 meters high. On the side of the Piave river, there is an inscription on the wall of the tower that can be attributed to the architect. The bell tower bears four bells from the Premiata De Poli foundry from 1934.
