The Cathedral of Santa Fe de Antioquia or the Cathedral Basilica of the Conception ( Spanish Catedral Basílica de Inmaculada Conceptión ) is a Roman Catholic church in Santa Fe de Antioquia , Colombia . The cathedral of the Archdiocese of Santa Fe de Antioquia is consecrated to the Virgin Mary with the invocation of the Virgin Mary and bears the title of a minor basilica .

history

At the end of the 18th century, the parish church of Santa Fe de Antioquia threatened to collapse because of the termites that had destroyed much of the roof structure. For this reason, and the desire of the people of Santa Fe to build a larger church that could be suitable for a future cathedral, construction began. There was a promise from the Holy See and the Spanish monarchy to found a new diocese.

The foundation stone was laid on March 17, 1797. According to plans by the Capuchin friar Domingo de Petrés, who also designed the cathedral of Bogotá , construction began with a great deal of personal contribution from the parishioners under the guidance of Juan Esteban Martinez. During the construction, Pope Pius VII founded the diocese of Antioquia on August 31, 1804. Due to the limited resources, construction dragged on until 1837, when the cathedral was consecrated by Bishop Juan de la Cruz Gómez Plata. The painting of the Immaculate Conception was in the nearby Santa Barbara Church during construction and has now been transferred in procession to the cathedral. The cathedral received on March 5, 1941 by Pope Pius XII. additionally awarded the title of a minor basilica. The historic area of ​​Santa Fe de Antioquia, including the cathedral, was declared a National Monument of Colombia by Law 163 in 1960 .

Building

The church is located on the northeast side of the main square of Santa Fe de Antioquia. The classical style was combined with baroque details. Its four-story church tower with a height of 47 meters stands on the left side of the entrance, the clock was installed in 1843. The facade with a high, triangular ornamental gable is plastered white and has three doors. A figure of Mary stands in a central niche. The rectangular ground plan of the Basilica has three aisles with bows, carried by Tuscan columns. A flat crossing tower rises at the intersection of the central and the indicated transept .

Furnishing

The Church is with art in the colonial equipped , so with a silver tabernacle and also silver chandeliers. There are side altars on the outer walls. The portrait of Juan E. Martínez, the director of the plant, was placed in the sacristy. The first organ was initially lost during transport due to a shipwreck, but could still be saved and installed. At the beginning of the 20th century, however, the organ was moved to the choir of the nearby St. Barbara Church in the city. In 1959 a new organ with 14 registers and 950 pipes was purchased from EF Walcker Cie in Ludwigsburg .
