The Cathedral of Trujillo or Cathedral Basilica of St. Mary ( Spanish Catedral basílica de Santa María ) is the main church of Trujillo , Peru . The Cathedral of the Archdiocese of Trujillo , entitled a minor basilica , was built from 1647 to 1666.

history

The first construction of the church was built in a simple form when Trujillo was founded in 1535. In 1616, Pope Paul V made this church the cathedral of the new diocese. In the devastating earthquake of February 14, 1619, the church was destroyed along with the city. The reconstruction was commissioned to Bartolomé de las Cuevas, but did not survive the earthquake of February 29, 1635. The third, more earthquake-proof construction was commissioned in 1647 to the architect Francisco de Soto Ríos and then completed by Francisco Balboa in 1666.

In 1911 extensive renovations were carried out with an extension in the choir and a redesign of the main altar. The brick floor was replaced with tiles in the nave and a marble floor in the choir. On August 23, 1967, the cathedral was opened by Pope Paul VI. raised to the minor basilica. However, the 1970 earthquake severely damaged part of the church and caused the bell tower and dome to collapse, and the converted main altar was also destroyed. In the following two decades, the structure was completely restored. In 1972 it was declared a national treasure of Peru.

The double tower facade of the church is painted in a striking yellow with white highlights. The nave was built as a three-aisled pseudo - basilica with a crossing dome . The interior of the church is sober, the ceilings were designed as barrel vaults . The free-standing main altar in the baroque Churrigueresque style with rococo altar pictures from the painting school of Cuzco is striking . This type of altarpiece can only be found in Peru in the Cathedral of Cusco . Also important are the oldest altarpieces by Trujillo, St. Peter and John the Baptist from the end of the 17th century, as well as the choir stalls.

The adjoining Museo Catedralício shows colonial paintings, silver work, figures of saints and vestments from the time of the Viceroyalty.
