Katherine Smart (born in 1965 in Edinburgh is) a British brewer , Brennerin , Hefewissenschaftlerin and immediate former President of the Institute of Brewing and Distilling .

Career

Smart, nee Wood, started school in Malta but grew up in Biggin Hill, Kent, where she was taught at the Charles Darwin School, the only secondary school in the area. In 1987 she graduated from the University of Nottingham with a bachelor's degree in life sciences .

After graduation, Smart received the Rainbow Research PhD Scholarship and worked in the research department of the Bass Brewery in Burton-Upon-Trent , where she met her future husband, Chris Smart. Her research on yeast and fermentation in the brewery was carried out under the supervision of the University of Glasgow and culminated in a PhD in Fermentation and Brewing Science in 1990 .

From 1990 to 1992 Smart worked as a postdoc at Cambridge University at the Institute of Plant Science on the Stability of Fruit Juices . She then built a team at Oxford Brookes University's School of Biological and Molecular Sciences to work on yeast and brewing. In 2001 she played a key role in setting up the university's national brewery library .

In 2005, she became Professor of Brewing Science at Nottingham University, making her the UK's first female Professor of Brewing Science. Smart led both her brewery research and innovation program aiming to use resources like water and energy efficiently, and helped build the bioenergy and brewing science building with a state-of-the-art microbrewery that opened in 2011. Smart also led research on the fermentation step of converting biomass to bioethanol, including the logistical, economic and social aspects required for large-scale production of biofuels.

In 2012 she became Global Chief Brewer for SABMiller, which was then the second largest brewing company in the world. She was the first woman to hold this role. After taking over SABMiller, she continued to be the chief brewer at ABInBev, which is now the largest brewing company in the world.

In 2016, Smart was elected President of the Institute for Brewing and Distillation and received the Ph.D. at Nottingham University.

In 2017 she left ABInBev to co-found The Surrey Copper Distillery with her husband Chris Smart.

In 2018, she was appointed Professor of Brewing and Distillation Sciences in the Faculty of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology at Cambridge University and Chair of the Worshipful Company of Brewers. In addition, she was elected to the Chamber as the first woman in the history of the Brewers 'Company and was inducted into Brewers' Hall in London on December 13, 2018.

Research priorities

Her main research interests include yeast cell biology, fermentation science , brewing and distillation science , raw material supply chains , the conversion of lignocellulose into biofuels and biorefining .
