Katherine Van Winkle Palmer

Katherine Van Winkle Palmer , nee Katherine Hilton Van Winkle, (* 1895 , † 1982 ) was an American paleontologist , conchologist and geologist.

She studied at the University of Washington in Seattle with a bachelor's degree in 1918. 1918 to 1922 she was an assistant in geology at the University of Oregon and then went to Cornell, where her husband was a professor, where she received her doctorate in 1925 and where she taught until 1946. In between, she held positions in 1928 as curator of paleontology at Oberlin College , she was a technical expert at the New York State Museum in 1945/46 and at the Redpath Museum at McGill University in 1950/51 and at the Provincial Museum in Quebec in 1951. From 1951 to 1978 she was director of the Paleontological Research Institution in Ithaca (New York) . Even after her retirement, she continued to research there.

She was particularly concerned with fossil mollusks .

She was married to E. Laurence Palmer (1888-1972), professor at Cornell University (Department of Rural Education).

In 1972 she received the Paleontological Society Medal . She was president of the American Malacological Society in 1960 and was treasurer for many years and president of the Cushman Foundation of Foraminifera Researchers in 1960 . She was a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science , the Paleontological Society, and the Geological Society of America . Palmer was an honorary doctorate from Tulane University and an honorary member of the SEPM .

The marine snail genus Kapalmerella was named after her.
