Kathryn Gutzwiller

Kathryn Jarrell Gutzwiller (born September 25, 1948 in Hinton , West Virginia ) is an American classical philologist .

Life

She received her PhD in Classics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (1977). She is now a professor at the University of Cincinnati . She was also the director of the American Philological Association (APA) and the editor of the APA's American Classics Series. Gutzwiller has received numerous scholarships, including a National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) scholarship, a fellowship at All Souls College in Oxford , a fellowship from the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton , a scholarship from the American Council of Learned Societies ( ACLS) and a US Science Council Loeb Classical Foundation Grant. In 2001 she received the Charles J. Goodwin Award of Merit from the American Philological Association for her book Poetic Garlands , and twice she received the Gildersleeve Award for best article in the American Journal of Philology . In 2002 she received the Rieveschl Award for Scientific Excellence from the University of Cincinnati.

Gutzwiller's research focuses on the Hellenistic Greek literature, especially the Epyllion , the epigram ( Meleager , Poseidippos ) and the pastoral poetry of Theocritus .
