Kaulenbachtal

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Kaulenbachtal is a former slate mining area in the slate mountains on the left bank of the Rhine . It lies between the places Müllenbach , Laubach and Leienkaul in Rhineland-Palatinate .

From 1695 to 1959, roofing slate of the best quality was mined in Kaulenbachtal. The shale mining was for the three surrounding villages of greater importance. Due to a water ingress at the Maria-Schacht mine, dismantling was stopped and the area closed.

In the middle of the industrial wasteland , between the remains of historic buildings and the slate heaps, a unique flora and fauna developed. The area has been designated as a listed zone "Kaulenbachtal slate mining and processing area" since 1993.
