The Kautenbach is one of the typical small rivers that flow from the Hunsrück to the Moselle . It rises at about 400  m above sea level. NHN in the district of Kleinich and flows after 13.2 km as a right tributary in the locality of Traben-Trarbach . Its catchment area is 60.5 km².

In the village of the same name, Kautenbach, which belongs to Traben-Trarbach, the water develops from several source streams into a fast-flowing stream, it flows through a narrow valley to the Moselle. A road accompanies him in the lower reaches.

Flora and fauna

In the narrow upper reaches, slopes wooded with oak and hornbeam border directly on the stream. At the lower reaches mainly willows and alders , which are hardly used economically today. Gray herons and mallards are the most common water birds in the Bachtal.
