Kawhia is a village in the Otorohanga District of the Waikato regionon the North Island of New Zealand .

geography

The village is located around 50 km southwest of Hamilton in the northwestern part of Kawhia Harbor , a natural harbor that extends from the Tasman Sea to the east inland. The village is located together with the settlements of Aotea and Okapu on a peninsula that separates it from the smaller Aotea Harbor in the north.

From running east-west New Zealand State Highway 31 is Kawhia around 15 road kilometers.

history

According to the Māori legend , Kāwhia was the place where the canoe Tainui Waka first docked. This place is marked by a large pohutukawa tree, sacred to the indigenous people , which is the largest in New Zealand.

Kāwhia was an important port in the early colonial times. The area of ​​around 20 hectares on which the settlement is located was bought by the government in 1880 from a European who claimed the land at the time. Māori , as the original owner of the land, had forfeited the right to the land due to debt.

In the 2013 census, the town had 339 inhabitants, 813.1% fewer than in the 2006 census.

The place has a long sandy beach and a golf course. To the west of the village are the Te Puia Hot Springs on the beach, here thermal water emerges on the beach, in which you can bathe at low tide when you dig a pit in the sand. At the New Year, a rowing regatta with whale boats is organized in the village.
