Kayah (singer)
Kayah (Katarzyna Rooijens, nee Szczot; born November 5, 1967 in Białystok ) is a Polish singer.
Career
In the mid-1980s Kayah worked with the reggae bands Rastar and Zgoda, before making her debut at the Karlshamn Baltic Festival in 1988 with the song "Córeczko". In the same year she released her debut album Kayah .
After that, Kayah sang for a long time as a background singer in other groups and in 1995 she released her first self-produced solo album. On Kamień she presented melancholy pop songs. Kamień was an instant hit. In 1996 she was awarded the Polish Fryderyk Music Prize in the Best Singer category for her performance .
In 1997 she turned to American soul music with Zebra . This is what the cover version of The Doors classic " Light My Fire " stands for.
In 1999 she then created an album together with the Yugoslav composer Goran Bregović that became one of the most successful in Polish pop history . More than 700,000 copies have been sold to date, which earned both artists the diamond record. In complete departure from the soul music practiced recently, this album was a combination of old Slavic folk songs and modern rhythms. Especially the song "Prawy do lewego" became a synonym. The video clip was played a few times on the Onyx.tv broadcaster .
In the meantime Kayah has shaped her own style, whereby she repeatedly demonstrates a wide range of variations.
In 2001 she recorded a single with the Cape Verdean singer Cesária Évora and performed in a duet with Udo Lindenberg . This shows that they are trying to repeat their success in Poland on an international level.
In order to release her album JakaJaKayah internationally, she invited several BMG employees from different countries to a special concert to present the album to them. But they didn't want to take the risk of releasing the album in any country. Later the BMG from Canada decided to release the album internationally. In 2001 the album was released under the name YakaYaKayah with English songs and a new cover.
Kayah's album StereoTyp followed in 2003 . In doing so, she completely separated from her soul-heavy style and recorded the songs in a modern garb of pop and dance, but also with the influence of R'n'B and club music. The repertoire was supplemented by slow ballads. Even if the album is kept very modern, you can still recognize the style that was influenced by Kayah. The singles "Testosteron" and "Do DNA" were released from the album.
Since 2005 she has been increasingly committed to her record company Kayax and together with one of her artists brought out the single "Prócz ciebie, nic" and at the same time the single "Jutro rano" with DJ Smolik. In the same year the best of album The Best & The Rest was released, on which both singles are.
Her last solo studio album Skała was released in 2009.
