Onyx.tv ( spelling onyx.tv ) was a TV music program produced by Onyx Television GmbH.

In contrast to MTV and VIVA , it had a reputation for broadcasting less mainstream and alternative music such as punk , electronic music or trip-hop .

It started broadcasting on January 6, 1996 under the name Onyx Music Television ( spelling ONYX Music Television ). On September 15, 2004, the French parent company Groupe AB replaced the transmitter with the documentation channel terranova .

history

The initial phase (1996 to 2000)

Logo from the initial phase

At the beginning, the 18-hour program Onyx was dedicated to the genres of jazz , country , hits and classical music . Older video clips from the 1970s and 1980s were added to the playlist as well as current pieces that fulfilled a certain claim. At that time, the broadcast was still from Dortmund and the station was broadcast via the Hotbird satellite, which is not very popular in Germany . Occasionally one was also represented in the cable network.

In June 1999 the broadcast time was extended to 24 hours a day. In October they moved to Cologne's Mediapark, where other television and radio stations such as VIVA and Eins Live were also represented.

The program was unprofitable in this form, so it was decided to reposition the station. Previous program content was to be outsourced to a digital platform called Onyx.plus , which would also provide channels on nature, science, automobiles, erotic and interactive entertainment. In addition, the activation of Onyx on an analogue slot on the ASTRA satellite was announced on September 1, 2000 (at the same time as VIVA) in order to make the redesigned program better known. Both the announcements about Onyx.plus and the ASTRA slot were revised at a later date.

The new start (2000 to 2001)

On September 9, 2000, the station was renamed Onyx.tv (pronounced English: "Onyx-dot-ti-vi") and has been "younger" since then. The new, younger target group was named "Generation Onyx" and the slogan was "Test the best". The heart of the new broadcasting schedule were programs aimed at the “Music Generation” or “Club Generation” and “Fun Generation”. An attempt was made to attract new viewers by increasing the proportion of current video clips.

The “Movie Generation” represented a novelty. Films from the cinema world - almost always older - were broadcast, so Onyx.tv was not just a music channel, but rather an entertainment program.

After more than a year, however, this concept went under and the music clips and broadcasts became more diverse. The movie generation was taken out of the program and gave way to an extended music generation for the time being , until it also disappeared together with the club generation and was replaced by a new program scheme.

The relaunch (2001 to 2004)

From autumn 2001 on, Onyx.tv (now pronounced in German: “Onyx-Punkt-Te-Vau”) mainly played clips from the charts and the 70s, 80s and 90s. A TED survey that came to the result that the majority of viewers would like their own show for videos from the 80s and 90s was the trigger for the shows Forever Young (with hits from the 80s) and Remember the Time (with Hits from the 90s).

This great response was followed by the decision to sharpen the station profile by increasing the number of moderated, special programs. This is how Rock On! , a format moderated by Axel Terporten , and Schattenreich , moderated by Medusa , included in the program. Almost every popular genre of music was given its own format. In addition, programs such as Onyx @ morning , chill @ onyx in the late evening and Onyx @ night were based on the daily rhythm. The claim was "Music is our message" .

Teletext and website

The Onyx.tv website and teletext were distinguished by their high level of music competence. In addition, forums - also on teletext - offered viewers the opportunity to exchange ideas. Both media services were produced and marketed by the Leipzig agency PMS-Interactive .

A curiosity here is a two-month break from January 1, 2004. From now on, the teletext was to be produced and designed by Groupe AB in Paris. However, the incompletely expanded service was never updated. The homepage remained at the status of December 31, 2003. In March 2004 these steps were reversed.

attitude

Especially since Onyx.tv could not be received everywhere in the cable network or only via the Hotbird satellite and was struggling with financial problems, there had been rumors of the station's bankruptcy since 1997. These always turned out to be wrong, but the broadcaster experienced many concept changes. The last one definitely turned away from music television when it was announced that on September 9, 2004, four years after the program reform, instead of Onyx.tv with the - meanwhile completely discontinued - nature channel terranova, a new start would be dared. In fact, Onyx.tv broadcast into the morning hours (around 6:45 a.m.) until September 15, 2004. The last video played was Goodbye from the Spice Girls .
