The film tells the story of Lana, who grew up in the Jakarta Zoo and leaves it with a cowboy and magician in order to live in the world outside the zoo for a short time and then return again. The film ran in the competition at the 62nd Berlinale and had its world premiere on February 14, 2012.

action

Three-year-old Lana roams the Jakarta Zoo in search of her father, who left her there. The giraffe keeper takes care of her and she grows up in the zoo. She is not a zoo employee, but leads groups of older zoo visitors and mainly explains the life of the giraffe to them . Another partially living in the zoo but not employed there is a young Indonesian who is dressed as a cowboy and appears as a magician. With this Lana leaves the zoo in order to appear with him disguised as an Indian. They work in a Jakarta market and the magician offers his show to the owner of a massage parlor, who is also supposed to establish contact with television. But there is no joint appearance there, because Lana sets fire to a wooden box in which the magician is in a trick and he disappears. At a loss, she turns to the owner of the salon, who hires Lana. In this way, she learns how to treat customers and how to keep them in the shop for as long as possible by slowly increasing the excitement of the guests. Lana actually works in the massage parlor for some time, but she keeps visiting the zoo. Then one day she leaves the salon and first returns to the magician's apartment, where she puts on one of his magic clothes, and then goes to the zoo at night, where at the end of the film she can finally touch the giraffe's stomach like her it has dreamed of since childhood.

background

The night of the giraffe is Edwin's second feature-length film after his directorial debut The blind pig who wants to fly . He shot it at the Jakarta Zoo . The film is characterized by many, slowly cut close-ups of various animals such as elephants , hippos and the giraffe. A few subtitles are displayed that give short definitions of zoo and terms related to it. The idea for the film comes from Edwin's own dream of living in the zoo. The film was produced by Babibutafilm and co- produced by Pallas Film . Furthermore, The Night of the Giraffe was financially supported by L'Atelier du Festival-Cannes . The film ran in the competition at the 62nd Berlinale and had its world premiere on February 14, 2012. It was the first Indonesian entry in the festival's competition in 50 years. The film has already found a German distributor, and the cinema release in Germany was January 17, 2013.

criticism

Wenke Husmann recited Die Nacht der Giraffe for Die Zeit and praised it very much. She highlighted Sidi Saleh's camera work and came to the overall conclusion: “What makes Postcards from the Zoo so beautiful is the ease with which this fable is told. There is little and seldom spoken, the images are for animals and gestures. And at some point we realize that it is longing that makes us human, but that there is no place in this world where it can be satisfied. "For Christiane Peitz from Der Tagesspiegel ," magic "returned with this film the competition of the Berlinale back. For them, "[the film] sends magical messages from this dream world back to the world of lost souls, which so many Berlinale films tell about." Birgit Roschy from epd Film praised the film's enchanted atmosphere at the beginning, but which is increasingly "in a meaningful art house." Mannerisms ”, whose meaning remained closed to the viewer.
