Kees Christiaanse (* 1953 in Amsterdam ) is a Dutch architect and professor emeritus for architecture and urban planning at the ETH Zurich .

Education and activity

Christiaanse studied architecture at the Technical University of Delft together with Art Zaaijer, with whom he realized the Kavel 25 project in The Hague from 1989 to 1992 as a diploma thesis. This order not only included the residential building with 44 residential units for social housing , but also the urban planning framework. For this work he was awarded the Dutch architecture prize Berlage Vlag in 1991 .

In 1988 Christiaanse completed his studies in Delft with a diploma in architecture and became a partner in the office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA) in Rotterdam, where he had worked since 1980. In 1989 he became self-employed and founded the Kees Christiaanse Architects & Planners (KCAP) office in Rotterdam, one year later together with Peter Berner, Oliver Hall and Markus Neppl ASTOC Architects & Planners in Cologne (since 2003 GmbH & Co. KG).

With his offices he is primarily concerned with planning tasks in architecture and urban development and works for public and private clients.

From 1993 to 1996 he was the design director of the Dutch state building department in The Hague.

In 1996 he was appointed professor for architecture and urban planning at the TU Berlin . He held the chair until 2003 when he accepted the chair for architecture and urban development at the ETH Zurich .

In 2009 he was curator of the Internationale Architectuur Biënnale Rotterdam (IABR) . From mid-2012, until the work was stopped, he was one of the six members of the IBA Berlin 2020 Board of Trustees .
