history

After the British takeover of Hong Kong Island, a nearby island was also claimed, which was a little north of East Point in Victoria Harbor . The island was named as Kellett Island after naval officer Henry Kellett . In 1841 a military defense system of the Royal Navy was built, which was expanded by three coastal guns in 1854 . After Kowloon fell to the British in 1860 , its strategic importance declined and the defense system was mainly used as a warehouse for ammunition and gunpowder.

In 1938 the facility was handed over to the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club , which built a new clubhouse on the island. The new building opened in 1940 and replaced the former clubhouse in North Point, which was no longer located directly on Victoria Harbor after landfill. 1951 to 1952 a dam was built between Kellett Island and Causeway Bay , so that the island could now also be reached by land. For the construction of the Cross Harbor Tunnel from 1969 to 1972, Kellett Island was integrated into the coastline of Hong Kong Island through land reclamation . The tunnel entrance is located south and east of the former island. The newly gained land also provides the yacht club with additional usable space, which is used, among other things, as a dry berth.

The Police Officers' Club , a recreational facility for club members, was opened in 1982 on the new piece of land between the tunnel entrance and Causeway Bay .

In 1991, a buried ceramic urn containing copper coins dated to the Sui , Tang and Song dynasties (581–1279) was discovered on Kellett Island near the yacht club house . The yacht club turned the find over to the Hong Kong Antiquities and Monuments Office .
