The replica of the Kemmeter cross

The Kemmeterkreuz in Großschwarzenlohe is a replica of a historic atonement Cross in Großschwarzenlohe , a district of the market Wendelstein in the Middle Franconian district of Roth in Bavaria .

description

The stone cross stands at the southern exit of Großschwarzenlohe, east of Rother Straße on an embankment. His name refers to a certain Konz Kemmeter from Leerstetten , the founder of the cross.

The small monument is a modern replica of the missing Kemmeterkreuz . The simple stone cross is made of red sandstone and has the dimensions 120 × 81 × 30 cm. It has a smooth surface and is hardly weathered. It is barely visible during the vegetation phase as the site is almost completely overgrown.

The missing original is probably from 1535, the replica from the 1960s. On a drawing by local historian Rudi Buchner from 1958 to 1963, the cross was still to the west of the street. The head of the old cross was chipped off and a cross was notched in the middle. The missing cross was presumably damaged and removed by a farmer . Today's replacement cross was made by the Büchenbach master mason Mathold . However, there was criticism when it was set up, as it did not match the original cross in shape or size.

legend

According to oral tradition, a Konz Kemmeter from Leerstetten was killed at this point by Niklas Stö (h) r , also from Leerstetten - or possibly vice versa. The murderer was taken to the prison in Schwabach . After the atonement negotiation and a comparison between the murderer and the relatives of the murdered person, the perpetrator had to erect an atonement cross at the scene of the crime. In addition, he had to swear primal feud (renunciation of revenge).
