Kenneth E. Bailey

Kenneth E. Bailey (born November 24, 1930 in Bloomington, Illinois ; † May 23, 2016 ) was an American author , professor of theology and linguist .

Bailey spent 40 years (1955–1995) lecturing and teaching in the Middle East in Egypt , Lebanon , Israel and Cyprus . He has degrees in Arabic Language and Literature, Systematic Theology and a PhD in New Testament from Concordia Seminary ( Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod ) in St. Louis . He was ordained by the Presbyterian Church (USA) . Since 1962 he has taught at the Near East School of Theology in Beirut (since 1974 as Professor of New Testament and Chairman of the Biblical Institute), where he founded the Institute for Middle Eastern New Testament Studies . From 1985 to 1995 he taught at the Ecumenical Institute for Theological Research in Jerusalem. Among other things, he has lectured at Princeton and was associate professor at the theological faculties in Dubuque , McCormick and Pittsburgh as well as at the Fuller Theological Seminary in Los Angeles .

In 1990, Bailey was appointed part-time Canon of the Diocese for Cyprus and the Gulf Region in the Episcopal Church of Jerusalem and the Middle East , based in Nicosia . After his retirement he returned to the USA. He lived in New Wilmington , Pennsylvania and was Canon of the Episcopal Diocese of Pittsburgh in the Episcopal Church of the United States of America .
