Kenneth Sanders Suslick (born September 1952 in Chicago ) is an American chemist who became internationally known for his work on sonochemistry .

Life

Suslick graduated from the California Institute of Technology with a bachelor's degree in 1974 and received her Ph.D. from Stanford University in 1978 with a thesis on Synthetic Analogs of Myoglobin and Hemoglobin . He then went to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), where he was first assistant professor, then associate professor and, in 1989, full professor. He held various chairs at the UIUC and has been the Marvin T. Schmidt Professor of Chemistry since 2004.

Suslick is one of the world's leading scientists in the field of the chemical effects of ultrasound , i. H. of sonochemistry. The research topics of his group include the synthesis of nanomaterials by means of ultrasound, sonoluminescence and mechanochemistry as well as chemical sensors . It is the inventor of a colorimetric sensor array ( colorimetric sensor array ), which is an opto-electronic nose for the detection of volatile organic compounds ( volatile organic compounds , VOCs). He is one of the world's most cited chemists, his Hirsch index  is> 110. He also holds more than 40 patents. He has worked in various functions at companies and has also founded companies himself.

Suslick was a Sloan Research Fellow from 1985 to 1987 and a Guggenheim Fellow in 2011/2012 . He became a Fellow of the American Chemical Society in 2010, the American Physical Society in 2015 and the National Academy of Inventors in 2016. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry . He has received numerous awards, including the Centenary Prize of the Royal Society of Chemistry in 2016 and the Chemical Pioneer Award of the American Institute of Chemists in 2018 . For 2020 Suslick was awarded the Joel Henry Hildebrand Award .
