Johann Bämler
Johann Bämler (actually Johann Kesselmann , * around 1425 - 1430 probably in Augsburg ; † 1503 ibid) was an early German book printer .
Life
The Augsburg tax lists have listed Bämler as scribe since 1453 . 1466–68 he classified some prints by the Strasbourg printers Johannes Mentelin and Heinrich Eggestein . In 1469 he married Barbara Schönsperger, the widow of a wealthy businessman. In 1472 he set up a printing company in Augsburg. The heyday of his shop is before 1485, but prints are still documented until 1495.
He worked closely with his stepson Johann Schönsperger (around 1455–1521) on the distribution of his prints and with the printer Anton Sorg († 1493) on the design . His company, together with other Augsburg printers, dominated the book market for German literature in Augsburg between 1480 and 1500, while Bämler worked as a bookbinder.
Bämler printed mostly German-language and popular works, such as the Histori vō dē grossē Alexand '. ' A beautiful history of how Troy was destroyed in its precious place. or the hystory of the cruise of Godfrey of Bouillon . His printed work Origin and Beginning of the City of Augsburg from 1483 is the first historiography , besides the Koelhoff Chronicle (1499), the only one that found its way into the printing press during the incunable period . The complete catalog of Wiegendrucke (GW) lists 139 printed works with duplicates.
family
Johann Bämler was the stepfather of the printer Johann Schönsperger and the book printer Anna Rüger , who was married to the printer Thomas Rüger († 1483) and the printer and bookseller Peter Berger.
