Kevin Duffy

Kevin Thomas Duffy (born January 10, 1933 in New York City , New York - † April 1, 2020 in Greenwich , Connecticut ) was an American lawyer .

Life

Duffy studied at Fordham University , where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (AB; 1954) and a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B .; 1958) from the University's Law School . From 1955 to 1958 he was a law clerk with Judge Joseph E. Lumbard in the Second District of the United States Court of Appeals . He was then from 1958 to 1961 Assistant United States Attorney in the southern district of New York and at the same time from 1959 to 1961 deputy head of the Criminal Division in the same district. He then practiced as a lawyer in New York City from 1961 to 1969. From 1969 to 1972 he was Regional Administrator of the New York Regional Office of the United States Securities and Exchange Commission .

On September 25, 1972, President Richard M. Nixon nominated him as a judge on the United States District Court for the southern district of New York to fill the vacant seat of Judge Irving Ben Cooper. On October 12, 1972, he was confirmed by the United States Senate. He was sworn in on October 17th.

In the course of his work as a judge, he presided over several cases with high public profile, for example the trial of the attempted robbery of a Brink’s armored car in 1981, in which two police officers and a security guard from Brink’s were killed in the subsequent shooting, and a trial against several members in 1985 the Gambino family , two trials related to the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, and one trial of Ramzi Ahmed Yousef .

On January 10, 1998, he switched to senior status and thus went into semi-retirement. His vacant seat has been filled with Richard M. Berman. On September 30, 2016, he ended his judicial work. From 2017 he worked as a consultant in the law firm of his son Kevin T. Duffy junior, Duffy & Staab .

In addition to his legal practice, Duffy has taught as an adjunct professor at Brooklyn Law School , New York University School of Law , Pace Law School and Fordham University School of Law .

In 1984, Duffy and his wife were jointly awarded the Fordham Law School Alumni Medal of Achievement .

Duffy was married with four children, three sons and a daughter. His wife was a judge on the Family Court of the State of New York . He last lived in Greenwich, Connecticut. He died in early April 2020 at the age of 87 as a result of SARS-CoV-2 infection during the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States .
