Kevin Patrick "Goldie" Goldthwaite (born December 9, 1982 in Sacramento , California ) is an American football player on the position of a defender . He currently plays for the Portland Timbers in the top division of North American football, Major League Soccer (MLS).

Career

Youth and amateur football

Goldthwaite began his active football career in 2001 at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana . He was in the All-Big East Second Team of the year 2003, as well as the All-Big East First Team of the year 2004. Goldie was also a semi-finalist in the competition for the Hermann Trophy . In his senior year at university, he played in a game for the amateur soccer club Indiana Invaders in the USL Premier Development League .

Club career

His professional career began in 2005 when he was drafted into Major League Soccer at the MLS SuperDraft as 17th pick for the San José Earthquakes . After the draft Goldie was awarded to the Portland Timbers in the USL First Division , where he came to a total of ten missions in the current season. He also ran into eight reserve games for the Earthquakes and had two appearances in the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup . After only ten championship appearances and the elimination of the Portland Timbers in the playoffs , Goldthwaite returned to the San José Earthquakes, where he was used in three regular games.

Together with some of his teammates, he moved to Houston Dynamo in 2006 , where he made a few assignments from 2006 to 2007. By the end of the 2007 season , he made a total of 21 completed games. His greatest success so far was receiving the Philip F. Anschutz Trophy after winning the MLS Cup in 2006 .

At the MLS SuperDraft 2008 Goldthwaite was drafted to Toronto FC in exchange for Richard Mulrooney . He made nine competitive appearances for the Canadians and scored the first goal in his career in a 3-1 win over Chicago Fire , the team's first win in the club's short history. On June 25, 2007 Goldie moved to the New York Red Bulls in exchange for Todd Dunivant . After only nine games, Goldthwaite injured his left knee and was eliminated due to injury until the end of the season. In the 2008 season he led the team statistics with 2,438 played minutes of a field player and was named Defender of the Year within the team . 2008 was also the season in which the Red Bulls were one of the leading players. He reached the final of the MLS Cup with the team. During the 2009 season he was injured again and only made 19 appearances.

He also failed to recover from his injuries in 2010 and was released by the New York Red Bulls on August 6, 2010 to make room on the squad. So the New Yorkers were able to sign the Mexican Rafael Márquez . On August 25, 2010 he moved to the Portland Timbers in the USSF Division-2 Professional League . After the Timbers had stopped playing at the end of the 2010 season, it was taken over into the newly established MLS franchise.
