Kevin Sharpe (historian)

Kevin M. Sharpe (born January 26, 1949 in Rochester , Kent , † November 5, 2011 in Southampton ) was a British historian . His research focus was on 17th century England .

Life

Sharpe was born in Rochester, Kent in 1949. There he attended Sir Joseph Williamson's Mathematical School . Later, he studied history at St Catharine's College of the University of Oxford and a PhD in Hugh Trevor-Roper . His dissertation later formed the basis for the monograph Sir Robert Cotton, 1586-1631: History and Politics in Early Modern England, for its first publication. From 1974 to 1979 Sharpe was a junior research fellow at Oriel College, University of Oxford and a lecturer at the University of Southampton . In 1994 he was appointed professor at the University of Southampton. In 2001 he left the university and moved to the University of Warwick . In 2005 he moved to Queen Mary, University of London , where he taught as a professor for Early Modern Culture and founded the Center for Renaissance and Early Modern Studies .

His book Criticism and Compliment: The Politics of Literature in the England of Charles I received the 1987 Whitfield Prize from the Royal Historical Society .

In 2009 he was diagnosed with a rare form of lymph gland cancer. After initially healing well, the disease returned and Sharpe died in November 2011 in Southampton General Hospital. At the time of his death, he was making preparations to teach again at the University of Southampton. He had a sister.
