Kiaeria starkei is a moss - kind from the family Oncophoraceae . The species is named after JC Starke, the collector of the type material .

features

Kiaeria starkei looks like a Dicranum species. It forms yellowish-green to brownish-green lawns up to 6 centimeters high. The trunk cross-section shows a strong central cord. The leaves are mostly crescent-shaped, one-sided, more rarely almost straight, drawn out pfriem-shaped for a broader base, with entire margins or with a slightly serrated tip and protruding rib. The leaf wing cells are clearly differentiated, large, tanned and partly two-celled.

The moss is often fruiting. The spore capsule on the reddish seta is elongated, slightly inclined and somewhat gooed. The empty and dry capsule is furrowed lengthways.

Location claims and distribution

Kiaeria starkei is a mountain moss, avoids lime and grows particularly in moist, long snow-covered ( snow valleys ), often north-facing locations on earth, gravel or overground rock. In the Alps it rises to the upper alpine level. The lowest known occurrence in Germany is about 700 meters above sea level in the Harz Mountains.

In Europe it occurs as far as the arctic regions. There are also deposits in Asia and North America. Information about occurrences in the southern hemisphere are doubted.
