The Oncophoraceae are a family of deciduous mosses from the order Dicranales .

features

The plants are usually small to medium in size and grow in lawns or cushions, rarely hanging. The stem cross-section has a central strand. The leaves with a single rib are egg-shaped to linear-lanceolate, sometimes subpulate, dry mostly curled, the leaf margins flat, bent back or curved and entire to toothed. The lamina cells are usually more or less square and smooth or nipple, leaf cells are usually not or only weakly differentiated. The capsule on the short or elongated seta is upright or inclined, symmetrical or asymmetrical, usually striped, the capsule lid is conical or beaked.

The mosses are usually soil or rock dwellers. They are mainly found in the temperate zones of the northern and southern hemispheres.

Systematics

Oncophoraceae was traditionally part of the Dicranaceae family . On the basis of molecular data, it has recently been separated as an independent family. However, more research is needed.
