The place was first mentioned in 1251 as Kywiz . Other spellings of the place name were 1384 and 1391 Kywicz , around 1535 Kiebitz , 1545 Kybitz , 1547 Kywitz , 1589 Kiwitz , 1598 Cibiz , 1618 Kiebitz, Kiebitzsch , 1672 Kübitz , 1752 Kiebitz (a Vorwerk), 1791 Kiebitz a Forwerg (to the manor Falkenberg) . The place name is probably derived from the Old Sorbian Kyjovici ( people of Kyj ). Kij means something like stick, stick or club. A derivation from Kyjov (e) c ( Stöckicht ) is also possible . Since the 16th century, the forms of writing have been adapted to the bird name lapwing .

Local history

The village Kiebitz originally belonged to the Lords of Ileburg and had 10 hooves . In 1529 there were still eight Hüfner residents in the village . It is believed to have died in the Thirty Years' War and then continued to exist as an outbuilding for the Falkenberg manor (lower court).

Allegedly the battle of Mühlberg ended on April 24, 1547 on a parcel of the Kiebitz suburb, where Elector Johann Friedrich von Sachsen was surrounded by Spanish and Hungarian hussars as well as Neapolitan heavy riders. The elector resisted and was finally injured by a sword blow by the Hungarian hussar Josef Luka "over the left cheek from eye to mouth". The elector shouted “He would only surrender to a German knight”, whereupon Thilo v. Trotha spoke to. Friedrich then surrendered with the words “I am Trothens prisoner” and handed over the sword and ring.

The mayor of Herzberg , Huth, bought two desolate farms in Kiebitz in 1684 .

In 1922 the quarrying of gravel started west of the village . The resulting Kiebitzer See was expanded in 1966 to become the “Kiebitz” local recreation center. Due to the favorable location on the lake, the Vorwerk slowly grew into an independent district.

Administrative affiliation

Until 1806 Kiebitz belonged to the electoral , then to the royal Saxon office of Liebenwerda , and in 1816 it became part of the Liebenwerda district . From 1952 the place belonged to the district of Herzberg , which then became part of the district of Elbe-Elster in 1993 .
