Kilayur (old name Kaliyapatti ) is a village with around 2,100 inhabitants in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu . On the outskirts there is a medieval Shiva temple.
location
Kilayur is located approx. 23 km (driving distance) southwest of the district capital Pudukkottai at an altitude of approx. 70 m above sea level. d. M. The climate is warm to hot; Rain falls mainly during the monsoon months from July to December.
population
The vast majority of the almost exclusively Tamil- speaking residents of the place are Hindus ; other religions hardly play a role in the rural regions of India. The female proportion of the population is approx. 8% higher than the male.
economy
Agriculture and, to a lesser extent, cattle breeding (cows, chickens) form the livelihood of the population. Small traders, craftsmen and day laborers have also settled in the village.
history
How far back the history of the place goes is unclear. The area was disputed from the 7th to the 9th centuries between the Pandya Empire in the south and the Pallava in the north.
Attractions
The Shiva temple, which only consists of the cella ( garbhagriha ), is mostly dated to the end of the 8th century; it probably once had a small wooden vestibule ( mandapa ), which rested on the common base zone. The outer wall of the building is only slightly structured ( pilaster ); Figure niches are missing. The surrounding eaves cornice shows small blind windows ( kudus ). The square tower resembles a building with bogus entrances and a concluding bellied dome ; her vase attachment ( kalasha ) that was probably there in the past has disappeared.
