Kim Ch'aek (born August 14, 1903 in Sŏngjin , Korea , † January 31, 1951 ) was a North Korean general and politician .
According to the official historiography of North Korea, Kim Ch'aek joined the partisan struggle of the later head of state Kim Il-sung for Chosen's independence from Japan in 1927 . In the following years he was taken prisoner by Japan several times . In 1932 he joined the Korean People's Revolutionary Army . He also became a member of the Communist Party . After the end of World War II and the installation of a Stalinist regime in North Korea by the Soviet occupying forces, Kim Ch'aek became Deputy Prime Minister Kim Il-sung and Minister of Industry. During the Korean War he was a member of the National Defense Commission and Commander-in-Chief, but died in the first year of the war, on January 31, 1951, of heart failure. He was buried in the Pyongyang Revolutionary Heroes Cemetery.
The city of Sŏngjin, which is located near his home village, was renamed after Kim Ch'aek. In addition, the Kim-Ch'aek Technical University in Pyongyang was named after him, as well as the Kim-Ch'aek steelworks and the Taehung fishing company Kim Chaek .
