Kim Kwang-seok (* 22. January 1964 in Daegu , † 6. January 1996 in Seoul ) was a South Korean folk rock - singer and songwriter .
Life
Kim grew up as the youngest child of a teacher in Daegu. When Kim was four years old, his father lost his job because he was involved in an illegal teachers' union. The family moved to Seoul. He played in the school orchestra, where he learned to read sheet music and play the violin , oboe and flute . He also sang in the school choir. In 1982, he started studying at Myongji University and started singing in cafes to earn some money. In 1984 he was involved in the production of the musical album Gaedongi (개똥이), which included protest songs. Here he came into contact with Kim Min-ki , one of the key figures in this music scene in South Korea. From January 1985 he had to do his military service and decided to become a professional musician.
Kim joined the band Dongmulwon in 1987 and their first album The Zoo was a commercial success in 1988. He released his first solo album in October 1989. In 1991 and 1992 further albums followed. His fourth studio album was his biggest success in 1994.
He hanged himself on January 6, 1996 at the age of 31.
Kim in pop culture
Kim's songs were often used on soundtracks , for example on Joint Security Area . The German hip-hop group Die Orsons dedicated a song to him in 2009, which is on their album Because yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory, Orsons, in eternity .
