Kim Seong-kon (also known by its western name sequence: Seong-kon Kim; born August 9, 1949 ) is a South Korean scholar, literary critic , translator and writer . From 2012 to 2018 he was President of the Literature Translation Institute of Korea (LTI Korea), which reports to the South Korean Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism . Kim is also professor emeritus at Seoul National University , where he has received the “Distinguished Research Award” seven times.

Kim was also the editor of respected literary magazines such as B. in Literature & Thought , 21st Century Literature and Contemporary World Literature and has been writing columns for the Korea Herald since 2003 .

Life

education

Kim received his Ph.D. in English from the State University of New York at Buffalo under the direction of Leslie A. Fielder . He later transferred to Columbia University to there under Edward W. Said , author of the famous work Orientalism , comparative literature study. After completing the courses for his Ph.D. graduated, he joined the faculty of Seoul National University in 1984 .

academic career

Kim held several positions at Seoul National University . First he was director of the SNU Students Residence Hall (1987–1989), then dean of the Faculty of English (1999–2001), further dean of the Language Research Institute (2001) and dean of the SNU Language School (2001–2005). He was then director of the Seoul National University Press (2009–2011) and also president of the Association for Korean University Publishers (2010–2011).

From 1998 to 2001 Kim was president and founder of the "Korean Association for Literature and Film", from 2001 to 2003 he was president of the "International Association for Comparative Korean Studies", and from 2004 to 2005 he took over the chairmanship of the "Council for Development." and Promotion of the Korean Association for English Language and Literature ”, from 2004 to 2006 he served as President of the“ Korean Association for Modern English Fiction ”and from 2007 to 2008 he served as President of the“ Korean Association for English Studies ”.

Kim has taught as visiting professor at Pennsylvania State University , the University of California, Berkeley and Brigham Young University and has conducted research as a visiting scholar at Harvard Yenching Institute , the University of Oxford and the University of Toronto .

Kim was a research member of the "South Korean Presidential Committee on National Cohesion" and also chaired the "Advisory Committee for the Promotion of Korean Literature Abroad" at the Ministry of Culture. Kim has campaigned for the promotion of Korean literature abroad and is a member of the "Advisory Committee on Korean Literature" of White Pine Press in New York. At the same time, he is vice-president of the “Seoul Literature Society”, which consists of foreign ambassadors and high-ranking diplomats who are stationed in Seoul. Kim is also Honorary President of the South Korean Alumni Association of the State University of New York (SUNY), Buffalo.

He received the “CU Award for Outstanding Alumni” (2009), the “Fulbright Award for Outstanding Alumni” (2010) and the “SUNY Award for Outstanding International Alumni” (2012).

Professional career

Kim first introduced the debate on literary postmodernism in South Korea in the late 1970s and early 1980s. He also did pioneering work in the field of post-colonialism and cultural studies in Korea. His works on postmodernism, postcolonialism, and cultural studies have particularly influenced Korean writers and scholars. In 2007, Kim received the prestigious Kim Hwantae Literature Prize for Criticism and in 2014 he was awarded the Wu-Ho Prize for Humanities .

Kim first worked as editor of the quarterly magazine Contemporary World Literature (1988–1988) and then as editor-in-chief of the monthly literary magazine Literature and Thought (2002–2005). He was also co-editor of 21st Century Literature and the Korea Journal , published by the Academy of Korean Studies .

As a self-proclaimed cultural diplomat, Kim gave regular classes to South Korean diplomats at the Institute for Foreign Affairs and National Security (1988–1994) and lectured extensively on Korean culture and society for foreign diplomats at KOICA (Korea International Cooperation Agency) and COTI (Central Officials Training Institute) in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (1997 to date).

Kim is also the vice-chairman of the Daesan Foundation's Seoul International Literature Forum. Kim was nominated by the Association of Korean Literary Critics as one of the "50 Representative Literary Critics in Korea since 1900". In 2016, the Korean Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism appointed Kim as chair of the Asia Cultural Forum and a member of the Korea-China Cultural Exchange Council. In the same year, he was offered the position as a part-time visiting professor at the National Human Resources Institute in the Department of Human Resources . The LTI Korea awarded Kim the “Plaque for Excellent Achievement” on behalf of the Management Assessment Team of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. Kim was subsequently appointed a deputy minister on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' public diplomacy council.
