Kim Yŏng-ch'un (born March 4, 1935 ; officially March 4, 1936 in the province of Kōgendō or Ryanggang-do ; † August 16, 2018 ) was a North Korean military and politician as well as his country's defense minister .

Kim Yŏng-ch'un studied at the Revolutionary Academy in Mangyŏngdae (today Kim-Il-sung Military University) and at the time of the Soviet Union at the Frunze Military Academy in Moscow .

In 1980 he became a candidate and in 1986 a member of the Central Committee of the Labor Party of Korea , at the same time he was promoted to lieutenant general. In 1987 he received the Kim Il Sung Order , the highest order in the People's Republic. In the meantime demoted to brigadier, he became army general again in 1990. During the conspiracy in the 6th Army Corps in Ch'ŏngjin in the mid-1990s, which intended to overthrow Kim Il Sung and in which the corps commander was killed, he is said to have arrested all ringleaders as part of his personal investigation . Corps have disbanded.

In 1995, after the death of the head of state Kim Il-sung , he was appointed deputy marshal . As a loyal follower of his son Kim Jong-il , he helped him to consolidate his power base in the first years after Kim Il-sung's death. Even before his appointment as defense minister, he was considered the right-hand man of Kim Jong-il and was Chief of Staff of the Korean People's Army and a member of the National Defense Commission , the governing body of North Korea , for over 14 years .

In February 2009, he replaced Kim Il-ch'ŏl , who had been in office since 1998, as Minister of Defense . In the 2009 parliamentary election he was elected to the Supreme People's Assembly. Since October 2010 at least, he has also been a member of the Politburo of the Labor Party Central Committee . In 2012 he was replaced as Minister of Defense.

Despite his removal from all important functions, he was awarded the honorary rank of Marshal of the Korean People's Army in April 2016 (after the death of Marshal Ri Ul-sol in 2015) .

Kim Yŏng-ch'un died on August 16, 2018 at the age of 82 as a result of a heart attack .
