Kincsem ( Hungarian : "my treasure"; * March 17, 1874 in Kisbér; † March 17, 1887 in Kisbér) was an English thoroughbred mare and is - measured by the number of victories - the most successful racehorse in history. Often referred to as a miracle mare , the brown Hungarian mare won all 54 races in which she competed.

ancestry

Kincsem was born in Kisbér , Hungary , in 1874 . The sire Cambuscan won the Newmarket July Stakes at the age of two and was third in St. Leger, England. The race record is unfortunately not fully known. He was probably not an outstanding racehorse, but he was also qualified for breeding by today's standards. The dam Waternymph represented high racing classes and won, among other things, at the age of three in the Nemzeti Dij (di Hungarian 2000 Guineas ) and at the age of five in the Pest Mare Prize (which later resulted in the Hungarian Oaks Race) and the Emperor's Prize I. Class in Klausenburg.

Racing career

Kincsem started ten races in Germany and Austria-Hungary at the age of two. If you consider the lengthy and exhausting journeys at the time, this workload has to be rated even higher. Nowadays it is difficult to imagine that a highly valued horse would be brought to the start so often at two years of age. Over the next few years, the number of races remained relatively high with 17 races as three-year-olds, 15 races as four-year-olds and twelve races as five-year-olds. In particular, one must consider the transport conditions, which are significantly worse than today, which underline the mare's performance. She was the first horse to win the Baden Grand Prix three times . Only Oleander was able to repeat this success, for which streets were named after both in Iffezheim - the location of the racecourse.

Breeding career

Kincsem only had a short breeding career as she died of colic at the age of thirteen after the birth of a foal. Of the five offspring she left behind - two stallions and three mares - one stallion (Kincs-Or) died shortly before his start in the German Derby , but one mare (Budagyöngye) won the German Derby, another mare (Ollyan -Nincs) the Hungarian St. Leger. Her offspring collected a total of 41 victories in classic races in Europe and had a great influence on European thoroughbred breeding.

The Winnica family, which is important at the Röttgen Stud, goes back to Kincsem via Ollyan-Nincs. From this family come such excellent horses as Wahnfried (including winner of the Baden GP), Wacholdis (champion two-year-olds 1950), Walesiana (classic winner), Wauthi and Well Made (both multiple group 1 winner) and a large number of good and very good horses.

Talpra Magyar was not successful as a racehorse, but was also set up as a stallion because of his famous mother and brought some horses that were Group 1 winners by today's standards. His son Tokyo deserves special mention , who was a very good racing horse and a successful stallion in the area of the old Danube Monarchy.
