action

The young white and shy Bahamian Jonny studies art in the capital Nassau and although his technique is excellent, he threatens the loss of his scholarship because there is a lack of emotionality in his pictures. However, his lecturer gives him another chance and sends him to the more remote island of Eleuthera , where he is supposed to paint a landscape picture of Lighthouse Beach, a beach that is difficult to reach. There he meets Romeo of the same age, who lives alone in a house on the island. Romeo is homosexual like Jonny , but he has not yet dared to come out in the conservative homophobic environment . In the evening they meet again in a bar and Jonny gives Romeo money for a drink, but leaves the bar before Romeo can pay him back the money. Romeo wants to give the money back and goes to Jonny at his house. Since he pretends to be very drunk, Jonny offers him to spend the night on his couch. Romeo wants to return the favor and take Jonny to Lighthouse Beach the next day. They spend the whole day together on the beach, although Jonny initially reacts very hesitantly to Romeo. But finally Jonny trusts and the two fall in love. Since they haven't reached Lighthouse Beach, Romeo promises to take Jonny there the next day. The next morning, the two of them are surprised by Romeo's grandmother and his mother, but Jonny can leave the house before they both notice him. Lonnette, with whom he has an alibi relationship, also came.

At the same time, the film tells of Lena, a Christian activist, and her husband Ralph, who are both committed against gay rights . Lena learns from her doctor that she has a sexually transmitted disease and that she has to take medication for it. Shocked, she confronts Ralph, but Ralph does not want to admit that he was unfaithful to her and instead blames her. In fact, Ralph got infected from male sex partners. After the argument with her husband, Lena leaves Nassau and crosses to Eleuthera, where she wants to recruit supporters for her campaign.

The paths of Jonny, Romeo and Lena cross at a barbecue on the beach, where Lena collects signatures. Romeo visits the party with Lonnette and when Jonny tries to talk to him, he pushes him away and pretends not to know him. The next day there is a meeting in the parish hall where Lena gives a hateful speech against homosexuals. Jonny gets up, contradicts her and receives unexpected support from the pastor, who explains to his congregation that every person is a child of God . Later Romeo visits Jonny again, they argue about Romeo's behavior, Jonny leaves the island and returns to Nassau. In the evening there is a dinner in the pastor's house with Lena, Ralph, Romeo, the two women from his family and Lonnette, where Romeo finds the courage to come out.

Romeo finally decides to follow Jonny and accept his true identity. But when Jonny is on the way to the agreed meeting point, he is stabbed by a youth. He dies shortly afterwards in the hospital and Romeo waits in vain for him.

backgrounds

While homosexuality is not illegal in the Bahamas , homophobia is widespread. For example, four years before the appearance of Children of God , Brokeback Mountain was banned by the country's censors. Even so, in 2009 , Children of God opened the Bahamas International Film Festival.

The film uses some television clips from actual protests against a cruise ship with homosexuals from 2004. When the ship of the well-known US presenter and entrepreneur Rosie O'Donnell docked in Nassau, there were demonstrations there.

The 2007 production of Children of God was preceded by a short film called Float , which tells a similar story. Romeo was also played in the Stephen Tyrone Williams short film, but most of the other characters were cast differently.

publication

The film was released in December 2010 in German-speaking countries by Pro-Fun Media on DVD without country code as the original version with subtitles ; a German dubbed version does not exist. In addition to some deleted scenes, the DVD also contains an audio commentary by director Mortimer. Internationally, the film was only released on DVD on June 7, 2011 by TLA Releasing .
