King of the Beach -

King of the Beach is the third studio album by the American band Wavves . It was released on August 3, 2010 in the United States on Fat Possum Records and in the UK on Bella Union , but due to early leaks , the album was released in digital form on July 1.

History of origin

The album is stylistically different from its two predecessors. It has a clearer sound and not the lo-fi distortion that was characteristic of the first two albums. Nathan Williams referred to the recordings in the studio in an interview with Pitchfork Media :

"The last thing I wanted to do was record the same record again. A lot of bands kind of get comfortable with something like that; once they know they've got something that some people like, they'll just go and try and recreate that. I just feel like that would've been so fucking boring to do. I wanted to just do something completely different. That was the beginning of the whole thing. But once I got into it, it wasn't even about recording a different record, necessarily. I was just trying to make the best record that I could, and I think that's what we did. "

reception

In general, the album received positive feedback. The album was # 50 for Pitchfork Media's Best Albums of 2010, while Spin placed the album at # 24.

The Australian youth radio Triple J wrote about the album: "Summer anthems about bum life and smoking weed have never been written with so much convincing energy and pep."

laut.de awarded four out of five stars and praised the fun "fuck-it-all-nihilism" that the record represents:

“The instruments no longer stumble over each other aimlessly, but complement each other to form a coherent punk rock song. The twangy surf riff is followed by a rumbling drum descent, followed by a guitar attack and anthemic singing. Even straightforward no-brainers like "Post Acid" and "Idiot" benefit from a more focused and varied songwriting. Enthusiastic Uuuuhs and Aaaahs remain the decisive building material for the pieces. "
