Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw ( Gujarati કિરણ મઝુમદાર-શો , Hindi किरण मजूमदार-शॉ , Kannada ಕಿರಣ್ ಮಜುಮ್ದರ್ ಷ ; born March 23, 1953 in Bangalore ) is an Indian entrepreneur. She is the chairwoman of Biocon Ltd. When her company went public in 2004, she became the richest woman in India.

Life

Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw was born in Bangalore as the daughter of a brewery worker from Gujarat . There she also attended the Bishop Cotton Girls School and Mount Carmel College. In 1973 she graduated from Bangalore University with a Bachelor of Science in zoology . Then she went to the Ballarat Institute of Advanced Education (now the University of Ballarat) in Australia to study brewing . She completed her studies as a master brewer in 1974 and then entered professional life as a trainee at the Carlton & United Beverages brewery . In 1978 she joined Biocon Biochemicals Limited in Ireland as a trainee manager.

Biocon

In cooperation with Biocon, she founded Biocon India in 1978 with a capital of 10,000 rupees . The first goal was to extract an enzyme from papaya . Her application for a loan was rejected by the banks because biotechnology was largely uncharted territory and her company could not offer any collateral. Over time, under her leadership, Biocon grew to become the largest manufacturer of biopharmaceuticals in India. When Biocon went public in 2004, the shares were oversubscribed 30 times. After the IPO, Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw held almost 40% of the shares and was India's richest woman with approximately $ 480 million.

Private life

Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw is particularly committed to preserving the historical character of Bangalore. Although she is committed to Bangalore, she has never learned the local Kannada language and advocates the supremacy of the English language. She is an art collector and has written a book (Ale and Arty) about brewing beer that has been illustrated by well-known Indian artists.

In 1998 she married John Shaw, a Scottish expatriate manager who was Managing Director of Madura Coats Ltd. worked.

Honors

The Economist and Fortune named Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw India's biotech queen, and the New York Times named her India's mother of invention .
