History and architecture

The Church of St. Spyridon was transformed from a former Catholic church into an Orthodox church in 1787. The Catholic Church dates from the 16th century . The church received a valuable iconostasis from the 16th century, including icons . This comes from the Church of St. Nicholas in Pula . The church was redesigned in the style of classicism .

The reformers of the church were Montenegrins . Soon after the church was remodeled, the Montenegrins were pushed by the rest of the population to convert to Catholicism . But to this day, their descendants are Orthodox and use both the Latin and the Cyrillic script . In 1834 the church finally became the property of the Serbian Orthodox Church.

In 1860 the classical church tower was built next to the church. In addition, all changes were made to transform the Catholic Church into a Serbian Orthodox one.

In 1880 the Serbian Orthodox Virgin Mary Protection and Intercession Chapel was built in Peroj. From 1890 the Montenegrins from Peroj, but also Greeks from nearby Pula, used the church together.

The church building was damaged in World War II . In 1992 during the Croatian War (1991–1995) the interior of the church was badly destroyed, the perpetrator used a hand grenade .
