Notre-Dame-de-la-Mer

The Catholic church Notre-Dame-de-la-Mer in Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer , a town in the French department of Bouches-du-Rhone region Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur , was built in the 12th century . The church has been a protected architectural monument ( Monument historique ) since 1840 .

history

A church must have stood here as early as the 6th century; it was mentioned in the will of St. Cesarius, the archbishop of Arles. The first fortified church was built in the 9th century and the church as we know it today was completed in the 12th century. Notre-Dame-de-la-Mer was built as a priory church that belonged to Montmajour Abbey . The original quarry stone church had only a single nave with three bays . In the 14th century a fortification wall with battlements and machicolation was built, so a fortified church was built. Since the place became increasingly important as a place of pilgrimage to visit the crypt with the Black Sara , the nave was extended by two bays to the west in the second half of the 15th century.
