Unterdorf Church

The Unterdorf Church is an Evangelical Reformed church in Affoltern , a district of the city of Zurich . It is on Zehntenhausstrasse on the edge of the historic district of Unterdorf .

history

In the Middle Ages, Affoltern was part of the Höngg Church. That is why the residents of Affoltern only received their own church in 1683. Their location was chosen so that the church was about the same distance from both districts of Oberdorf and Unterdorf . In the years 1916–1917 a stone vestibule was added to the west of the church and a first organ was built in the choir of the church, so that the church could meet the needs of the parish for the coming decades. However, when Affoltern developed from a village into a district of the city of Zurich from the 1920s, the infrastructure of the parish also had to be adapted. Therefore, in 1938, a parish hall with a hall as a second place of worship was built to complement the medieval Unterdorf church on Wehntalerstrasse . In the years 1971–1972 the Church of the Faith was built there as the second Reformed Church in Affoltern. Today the Church of Unterdorf and the Church of Faith are used alternately by the Reformed parish for Sunday services. In addition, the Unterdorf church is used by the city of Zurich as an abdication chapel for the Affoltern cemetery adjacent to the church .

Building description

Porch from 1917

The Unteraffoltern church is located on Zehntenhausstrasse in an area that is characterized by both historic and new buildings. The church is east-facing and consists of a single-nave, rectangular room with a polygonal choir closure. Visitors enter the church through a stone vestibule with a three-arched, open entrance in the west. This is determined by the regularly arranged arched windows. A small gallery and the organ in the choir complete the design.

The church has a choir with over the shingles covered roof skylights . This has a square floor plan and is completed by a high, eight-sided pointed helmet . While the hipped gable roof is covered with roof tiles, the pointed helmet of the roof rider is shingled.

organ

When the desire for an organ arose in Affoltern in the early 20th century, a pneumatic membrane shutter organ with twelve registers on two manuals and a pedal was built in the choir of the church in 1917 by the company Orgelbau Kuhn , Männedorf . In 1952 this first organ was replaced by an instrument made by Orgelbau Geneva AG. This second instrument had 17 stops on two manuals and a pedal. In 1982 this second organ was moved to Winterthur to the chapel of the Chrischona parish, from where it was transferred to a church in the town of Sfântu Gheorghe in the Covasna region , Romania, where it was consecrated on October 31, 2009. Instead of this second instrument, the present organ was built by Orgelbau Kuhn AG, Männedorf, in 1984. It is a mechanical instrument with 14 registers on two manuals and a pedal. It was inaugurated on December 1, 1984.
