The Church of Guldrupe ( Swedish Guldrupe kyrka ) is a Gothic - Romanesque country church on the Swedish island of Gotland, consecrated in the 12th century . It belongs to the parish (Swedish församling ) Vänge in the diocese of Visby . It is a so-called saddle church , the choir is higher than the nave .

location

The church is located in the western interior of Gotland, 24 km south of Visby , 8 km south of Roma , 22 km north of Hemse and 14 km northwest of Klintehamn .

Church building

Oak planks with dragon ornamentation, which are in the Gotlands Fornsal Museum in Visby, point to an earlier wooden church that existed in the parish (Swedish socken ) Guldrupe.

The current church is made of carved limestone and consists of a nave, a rectangular choir in the east, a steeple in the west and a sacristy in the north of the choir. The nave was built in the second half of the 12th century together with a smaller choir that no longer exists today. In the first half of the 13th century the tower followed and at the end of the 13th century the Gothic choir with the sacristy was added. The plans to replace the current nave with a larger one in the Gothic style were never carried out. The tall pyramidal dome of the tower is of interest because the construction is largely original. There are runes carved on the wood as instructions for the tower builders. Medieval crown beams with string ornaments are preserved on the eaves of the nave. The nave portal is still original, but the windows date from 1865. The nave, which initially had an open roof structure, is now covered by a flat interior ceiling. Wide ogival openings connect the nave with the tower room and the choir. The choir is covered by a tent vault that comes to a point in the middle. It is illuminated by a group of three windows in the east wall. The sacristy portal was probably taken over by the older choir. During the restoration from 1964 to 1965 under the direction of the architect Olle Karth , the interior roof was raised, among other things, as it cut off the triumphal arch.

Furnishing

  • In the tower room there is a baptismal font made of stone that Byzantios carved in the 12th century.
  • The pulpit is from the 17th century. In 1776 it was bought from the church in Vänge .
  • A picture of Saint Olav was made in the 13th century and is on one of the medieval side altars in the southeast corner of the nave.
