history

Development of the choir

According to the community chronicle, the teacher Johann Georg Wöhrl founded a music school in Altmannstein in 1844 with a focus on choral singing and instrumental music. August 3rd, 1844 can be regarded as the hour of birth of the church choir. On this day Wöhrl criticized the decline of church music in Altmannstein with the following words: "Such a complaint is rising louder and louder in my place of birth in Altmannstein. The complaint about the decline of church music there ..." . On November 18 of the same year he was able to count 46 music enthusiasts. Wöhrl's other initiatives were the founding of the Musikverein in 1848 and the Musik- und Gesangsverein 1849. In 1872, Wöhrl prompted the Altmannstein church choir to join the General Cecilia Association for Germany , and the Parish Association was born. Church and secular music found a fruitful complement to one another during this time. On December 23, 1887, Johann Georg Wöhrl was granted honorary citizenship of the Altmannstein community.

During Wöhrl's lifetime the church choir received special praise from the then Regensburg bishop Ignatius von Senestrey , who gave the sacrament of Confirmation in Altmannstein : The bishop had "repeatedly expressed his appreciation for the achievements of the church choir in Altmannstein" , said Bishop Secretary Dr. Franz-Xaver Leitner in his letter of June 19, 1876. The choir's repertoire comprised several five- and six-part masses, including the Missa Papae Marcelli by Palestrina and the Missa solemnis op. 24 by Michael Haller . According to a report in the Regensburg diocese newspaper from 1893, the choir from the "small Altmannstein" had a level of performance that "could be heard in any capital city". The annual three-day Cäcilienfest, Altmannstein's outstanding social event, also attracted national attention. In addition to church celebrations, secular music events also took place in the Altmannstein inns.

However, Johann Georg Wöhrl was not spared from critical voices. One of the most conspicuous utterances comes from the year 1865, when during the service an altar boy on the gallery brought him a message saying “You should stop!”. In 1886, when Wöhrl retired, Franz Xaver Hack, who had previously worked as an organist but was transferred to Speinshart in 1890, took over the direction of the choir. On March 12, 1891, on the occasion of the 70th birthday of Prince Regent Luitpold of Bavaria , the choir framed a festive service with the Missa "Assumpta est" by Michael Haller. On the occasion of the visit of Princes Rupprecht of Bavaria and Alfons of Bavaria on September 16, 1893 in Altmannstein, the church choir gave a concert together with the band of the infantry body regiment. In 1902 the choir consisted of 40 active singers and 14 passive members. At that time, the management was held by the teacher Josef Schuster, who also ran a singing school with 17 children.

With the beginning of the First World War , there were no more Cecilia festivals, the musical activities were limited to the setting of the liturgy. The church choir existed - albeit somewhat reduced - until the 1950s, while the secular music and choral society was dissolved in 1924. The choir received a new impetus after the takeover by SM Primasia Kroner in 1955, the superior of the Mallersdorfer sisters based in Altmannstein and at the same time director of the kindergarten and retirement home and later honorary citizen of Altmannstein. In the church, which was expanded under Pastor Max Zellner, more and more complex masses were performed with orchestral accompaniment. The choir was also involved in regional church music events. The rediscovery of the composer Johann Simon Mayr , who was born in Mendorf , meant that the choir concentrated more on rehearsing his musical works.

The 150th anniversary of the choir was celebrated on November 27, 1994 under the direction of Max Süß. In the same year the Altmannstein church choir in Bergamo , Mayr's long-standing place of activity, framed festive services (including in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore ) and events. In 1996 the choir and artists from the Bergamo Music Conservatory organized a concert and a festive service. Since 1998, Wolfgang Schlagbauer has expanded the choir's repertoire to include several other works by Johann Simon Mayr. In addition to the already existing May singing, he initiated the annual benefit May prayer . In recognition of his commitment, the choir director was awarded the DONAUKURIER honorary award in 2012 . In 2013, the 250th year of Johann Simon Mayr's birth, there was not only a memorial service but also a concert with the Nuremberg Philharmonic under the patronage of Georg Ratzinger in Altmannstein and Nuremberg .

In particular, the choir has dedicated itself to rehearsing the sacred works of Johann Simon Mayr and making them accessible to a wider audience. For example, the Eja Mater from the Stabat Mater by Mayr premiered in Germany on November 10, 1996 . In addition, the vocal ensemble feels committed to the works of Theodor Grünberger and regularly frames services in the Salvatorkirche in Bettbrunn, his birthplace .
