Kirill Gorazievich Geworgjan

Kirill Gorazijewitsch Geworgjan ( Russian Кири́лл Гора́циевич Геворгя́н ; born April 8, 1953 in Moscow ) is a Russian diplomat . Among other things, he worked as the extraordinary and plenipotentiary ambassador of his home country to the Netherlands from 2003 to 2009 and from 2009 headed the legal department of the Russian Foreign Ministry . In November 2014, he was elected a judge at the International Court of Justice , and his term began in February 2015.

Life

Kirill Geworgjan was born in Moscow in 1953 and studied international law at the Moscow Institute for International Relations from 1970 to 1975, as well as further studies at the Diplomatic Academy of the Foreign Ministry of the Soviet Union in Moscow from 1975 to 1978 . He then worked in the Foreign Ministry's Contracts and Law department until 1987, including as Head of the Human Rights Section . From 1987 to 1992 he headed the Legal Aspects of Multilateral Relations Department in the International Law Department, before serving as Deputy Director of the Ministry's Legal Department in 1992/1993.

He then worked from 1993 to 1997 as an advisor to the Russian embassy in France , and then from 1997 to 2003 again as the deputy director of the legal department. From 2003 to 2009 he served as Russia's extraordinary and plenipotentiary ambassador to the Netherlands and permanent representative of his home country to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons . From 2009 he was director of the legal department of the Russian Foreign Ministry .

Kirill Geworgjan has also been a member of the Permanent Court of Arbitration since 2011 and has also been a member of the United Nations International Law Commission since 2012 . Between 2008 and 2011 he represented Russia in two cases before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague , including in the proceedings for the legal opinion on the validity of Kosovo's declaration of independence . In November 2014, he was elected judge at the ICJ by the General Assembly and the Security Council of the United Nations . His regular nine-year term began in February 2015.

Kirill Geworgjan is married to the actress Marina Nejolowa and has two daughters.

Awards

Kirill Geworgjan received the Order of Honor and the Order of Friendship of the Russian Federation for his work .
