The Japan Meteorological Agency ( JMA for short , Japanese 気 象 庁 , Kishō-chō , German 'Meteorological Authority') is a government agency that, as the central body in Japan , is responsible for the collection of meteorological data. It publishes weather reports and forecasts . The agency works semi-autonomously under the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport . The forecast and early warning of earthquakes , volcanic eruptions , typhoons and tsunamis is also the responsibility of the Meteorological Authority.
In addition to its headquarters in the Chiyoda district of Tokyo, it has five larger stations within Japan and is supported by four marine stations. A network of smaller meteorological observation stations form the basis for collecting the weather data. Also weather satellites are used.
