Kitty Grime
Kitty Grime (actually Mary Christine Godfrey Grime , born January 31, 1930 in Derby (Derbyshire) , † August 21, 2007 ) was a British journalist, music critic and jazz singer .
Life
Grime was the eldest of three daughters of a school principal and a music teacher. She studied English at London University ; in addition, she appeared in amateur theater groups before she became known in the jazz scene in London's Soho district in the 1950s . She wrote concert programs and blurbs for Carlo Krahmer's jazz label Esquire Records and began writing about jazz. She frequented Ronnie Scott and Johnny Dankworth circles , as well as Studio 51 on Great Newport Street. She also sang, played the piano and wrote lyrics. In 1959 she ended her engagement with Esquire to write for Decca Records . Two years later she switched to Jazz News and published her articles in the column What I Feel About Jazz , in which she wrote about musicians like Charles Mingus and Kathy Stobart , and later also about the pioneers of free jazz like John Coltrane , Ornette Coleman and Joe Harriott .
From 1962 when Grime wrote Observer in the style -Kolumne, from the late 1960s for the magazine Woman's Own over decor and furnishings. She also wrote travel and accommodation books, and in 1979 a book on Jazz at Ronnie Scott's . Her book Jazz Voices was published in 1983 , with portraits of musicians such as Jon Hendricks , Annie Ross and Ray Ellington . In the 1980s she appeared again as a singer, accompanied by jazz musicians Dave Cliff , Jeff Clyne , Phil Lee and Brian Lemon , and others. a. in the Royal Festival Hall .
