Klaus Günter Stahlschmidt (* 1942 in Paderborn ) is a German, Roman Catholic priest, long-time pastor in one of the largest parishes in Munich. Stahlschmidt has gained wide recognition through his way of approaching people and his commitment to marginalized groups.

Life

Stahlschmidt grew up on an estate in Fürstenberg ( Büren district ) in a family with five siblings. After elementary and secondary school he attended the commercial school in Paderborn. He then worked at the Federal Finance Office in Münster. Later he attended evening school in Neuss , worked for two years in a factory and three years with marginalized groups, juveniles who had committed criminal offenses and social orphans. He did the Abitur and studied theology in Münster and Munich .

On June 25, 1977 Stahlschmidt was by Josef Ratzinger, later Pope Benedict XVI. ordained a priest. He celebrated his first class on June 30, 1977 in Graefelfing , where he was chaplain. Before that he had been a pastoral assistant in this church for a year. Then he was chaplain in St. Peter and Paul in Landshut . There he was also city youth pastor, pastor for students and conscientious objector. From October 1, 1982 to the end of September 2017, Stahlschmidt was pastor of the Leiden Christi congregation (in Munich, Obermenzing), and since 2011 a parish association with the St. Leonhard congregation. From 2003 he was dean of Menzing and then of Nymphenburg . In 2006 he was honored by the Bavarian government with the State Medal for Social Merit . In 2011 Stahlschmidt was appointed to the clergy . In 2018 he received the "Würmtaler 2017".

Act

Stahlschmidt was always strongly influenced by the Second Vatican Council and designed his services with freely formulated prayers and speeches. In his speeches he took up the specific worries and needs of the worshipers. He did not provoke with his form of pastoral care, but sought and found new ways. At first he was blackened several times. Through his pastoral care he has paved the way to faith for many believers. As a priest, he was always more concerned with the well-being of the faithful and understandable preaching than with petty regulations. He was sometimes called "arguable" because he was not always of the same opinion with the hierarchy, but he earned respect far beyond the borders of Obermenzing. Stahlschmidt wrote critical letters to Cardinal Ratzinger, which he always replied immediately. When Pope Benedict XVI. Ratzinger once wrote to him: “I always kept an eye on you, you are a real pastor to me”.

Stahlschmidt has done a lot for the homeless and refugees. Around 140 guests from many countries lived in his rectory. In addition, around 150 mothers and their children lived in the vicarage for a time, mostly tolerated refugees who could then be placed in apartments. On his initiative, rooms under the church that were previously unused were converted into accommodation, where six to eight homeless men were given temporary apartments and cared for. About three quarters of this was able to stabilize again. However, these rooms have since had to be closed due to fire protection problems.

Stahlschmidt always tried very hard to help people in borderline situations. He has long been the chairman of the Munich Association of Orphaned Parents . Those affected often came from far away to his church services.
