Passion of Christ (Munich)
Suffering of Christ is the Catholic parish church of Obermenzing in Munich .
history
The churches of Menzing were listed in a diocese description from 1315 as branches of Pasing.
In 1881 Obermenzing was added to the Pasing parish, which had just become independent, and looked after by the Church of the Birth of Mary . As a result of the strong increase in population, the old Georgskirche soon became too small, which gave rise to thinking about building a new church in Obermenzing. The project was promoted by the simultaneous wish of the Congregation of the Passionists to settle in the diocese. The shell was financed by donations from the USA in the amount of 20,000 dollars. In gratitude for this support, the church was called the Suffering of Christ or, earlier, the Passion Church. Georg Buchner was won over as the architect . Construction work began on May 2, 1923, and the foundation stone was laid on June 3, 1923 by Prelate Michael Buchberger . Cardinal Michael von Faulhaber finally consecrated the church on November 9, 1924.
After the war damage had been repaired, various renovations could be started in the 1950s. In 1965, as part of the liturgical reform, a major renovation was carried out by the architect Siegfried Östreicher and the sculptor Blasius Gerg . Among other things, a people's altar was made from a block of stone. The church received its current appearance in the course of renovation work in the years 1996–1999. The cross with the accompanying figures was attached to the back wall, the heating system was renewed, lighting, acoustics and electrical installation were revised.
architecture
With an external width of 26 meters, the church has a total length of 58 meters, a ridge height of 27 meters and a tower height of approximately 45 meters. It has been designed for a capacity of 2000 people. Conceived as a basilica , it takes up Gothic style elements . The west portal was designed by the sculptor Hans Panzer and shows scenes from the life of Jesus with the focus on the crucifixion. Felix Baumgartner's choir windows show Isaac's sacrifice and the erection of the brazen serpent .
Organs
Since the consecration of the church an organ has been in the passion of Christ. The instrument was installed by the organ building company Albert Moser from Munich / Sendling in September 1924. The planned expansion and complete expansion to 45 registers for 1937 did not take place. In 1964 the organ was expanded to 39 registers by Josef Zeilhuber . In 2011 the organ was extensively renovated by the Munich Orgelbau Johannes Führer company and equipped with a new console . The cone chest instrument has 39 stops (and one transmission ) on three manuals and pedal (2570 sounding and 53 mute pipes). The keyboards and stops are electric.
