The Roman Catholic parish church of St. Peter and Paul in the Lower Bavarian town of Landshut is a modern building in Romanesque forms, which was built in 1953 as a three-aisled basilica according to the plans of the Munich architect Joseph Rampl. The Franciscan monastery church of St. Peter and Paul , which was demolished in the course of secularization and was located in the historic old town of Landshut, around two kilometers west of today's complex, served as a model. To the east of the church is a kind of cloister , which is enclosed on the other three sides by the parish center . This complex is also based on the former Franciscan monastery. Due to its prominent location on Niedermayerstraße, an important entry and exit road in the east of Landshut, the Peter and Paul Church characterizes an entire district that was essentially created as a result of the large influx of people in the post-war period . This is now officially run as a city district under the name Peter and Paul .

description

The parish church of St. Peter and Paul is a north-facing building, which is stylistically based on the Romanesque church building. Two significantly narrower aisles with a pent roof are attached to a wide central nave under a steep gable roof . The choir is housed in a semicircular closing apse . A largely undivided tower with a flat pyramid roof is attached to the south-west corner of the church .

Inside, the church presents itself, despite the relatively small window areas, as a light, wide space that is spanned by a kind of coffered ceiling in the form of a flat barrel vault. A round choir arch provides a view of the altar room, which has been raised by five steps. The wooden beams of the ceiling form a sun to which a larger than life crucifix by the Munich sculptor Rolf Nida-Rümelin is attached. This hangs freely over the celebration altar . The nave is illuminated by an upper aisle made of rounded arched windows and a rose window above the organ gallery . There are also small round windows in the side aisles, while the choir room draws its light from a ribbon of windows at a great height. These colored windows, font , ambo and the relief on the tabernacle were created by the Munich artist Michael Friederichsen .

Bells

From the tower of the parish church of St. Peter and Paul, four bells ring with the tone sequence c sharp 1 –e 1 –f sharp 1 –a 1 , which corresponds to the so-called “ideal quartet”. They were cast by the Bochum Association in 1955 . It is the only cast steel bell in the city of Landshut.
