Klaus Hartmann (diplomat)

Klaus Hartmann (born March 11, 1940 - March 24, 2017 ) was a German diplomat . He was the GDR's ambassador to Peru and Bolivia .

Life

Hartmann learned the profession of skilled worker for furnace construction. After attending the workers and farmers faculty , he studied at KMU Leipzig from 1960 to 1964 and graduated with a degree in economics. From 1964 to 1971 he was deputy district building director at the Magdeburg District Council .

From 1971 to 1972 he was prepared for the diplomatic service. His first assignment took place in 1972 as 2nd secretary at the GDR embassy in Cuba. On February 14, 1973 he opened the first GDR embassy in Peru as chargé d'affaires. From 1976 to 1977 he was chargé d'affaires at the embassy in Venezuela. Hartmann, member of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED), graduated from the party college "Karl Marx" in 1978/79 . He was reinstated in Cuba and served as counselor in Havana from 1979 to 1984. From 1984 to 1985 he worked as an employee of the Latin America department in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the GDR .

From December 18, 1985, he worked as ambassador to the Republic of Peru and from March 13, 1986, second accredited to the Republic of Bolivia. He was ambassador to both countries until the end of the GDR in 1990. In March 1990 he negotiated the resumption of diplomatic relations as head of the special GDR mission that was in Santiago de Chile when the new Chilean President was inaugurated .

Hartmann last lived in Magdeburg and died at the age of 77.
