Klaus Lucas (born June 25, 1943 in Berlin ) is a German thermodynamic scientist and university professor .

Life

Klaus Lucas studied mechanical and process engineering at the Technical University of Berlin from 1962 to 1969, with a one-year break for an industrial activity in the USA . In 1970 he received his doctorate there in thermodynamics . He then went to the Ruhr University Bochum, where he qualified as a professor in 1975 in the subject of heat and mass transfer. From 1975 to 1978 he was department head for thermodynamics at the University of Stuttgart . In 1978 he was appointed head of the Thermodynamics Department at the University of Duisburg and from 1989 to 2000 he was also Scientific Director of the Institute for Energy and Environmental Technology eV in Duisburg-Rheinhausen. In 2000 he took over the management of the chair for technical thermodynamics at RWTH Aachen University and was retired there in 2008. From 2008 to 2015 he was Vice President of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences , of which he has been a member since 1999, and there a. a. responsible for the development of interdisciplinary research programs as well as for scientific contacts to the Arab world. Lucas is also a member of the German Academy of Science and Engineering (Acatech) . Since November 1, 2016, he has been a Fellow at the Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies in Potsdam, where he heads an interdisciplinary research program on dynamic structure formation for systemic risks in the complex systems of nature, technology and society.
