Klaus Oeggl

Klaus Oeggl (* 1955 in Innsbruck ) is an Austrian botanist who deals with the paleoecology and archaeobotany of the Alpine region. He is best known for his work on the life and environment of the neolithic glacier corpse Ötzi .

Life

Klaus Oeggl completed his studies in biology and earth sciences at the University of Innsbruck (LFU), which he graduated in 1981. In 1987 the doctoral thesis in botany followed. From 1982 to 1983, Klaus Oeggl taught at general secondary schools. In 1983 he moved to the LFU Innsbruck, where he first worked as a lecturer at the Institute of Botany. This was followed by employment as a university assistant at Sigmar Bortenschlager and as a university lecturer at this institute. In 1997, Klaus Oeggl was appointed associate professor at the Institute of Botany. Since 2011 he has held a professorship for palynology and archaeobotany and heads the research group of the same name at the Institute of Botany. As part of his teaching activities, he has also been a guest lecturer at the University of Bergen and as a visiting professor at the Suranaree University of Technology in Thailand and at the Free University of Bolzano .

Act

Oeggl deals intensively with the interaction between humans and plants in the past. The spectrum of his investigations extends from the spread of cultivated plants, the diet of agriculture of prehistoric people, the reconstruction of vegetation and the environment in the vicinity of prehistoric settlements. up to the emergence of today's cultural landscape in the Alpine region. In his research, Oeggl represents a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research approach with archaeological and other scientific disciplines, since the genesis of cultural landscapes and the development towards today's plant cover in the Alpine region are subject to multifactorial processes of an abiotic and biotic nature. His preferred methods are pollen analysis, plant residue analysis and geochemistry, which provide the basic data for hypothesis tests and model validation. His investigations in connection with the Neolithic glacier mummy "Ötzi" are outstanding. In addition, he worked intensively in his own research center (FZ HiMAT) on the paleo-ecological and socio-cultural effects of mining in the Alps. Oeggl advanced his studies in 45 research projects funded by the EU, science funds, foundations, museums and municipalities.
